Welcome

Patient Information

Thank you for visiting our website.

I hope you will find our website informative. My intent is for you to have a more in depth knowledge of procedures performed in our practice setting, as well as a chance to get to know myself and my staff. I started my practice in Boise in 1990 and over the years continue to enjoy Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery. I enjoy the many people I meet and it gives me a great sense of fulfillment to be able to treat their needs.

The reason that I decided to develop a website is three fold.

First I believe that it is advantageous for patients to have an idea of what to expect prior to their appointment and to know the staff before they arrive for their initial visit. For this reason, we have included a meet the doctor and staff section so you will feel more comfortable and know who to look for at your consultation appointment. Also, you can take a virtual tour of the office so this enables you to feel more comfortable with procedures and be more familiar with the area prior to arriving.

Secondly, I would like you to navigate through the website and have many of your questions and concerns answered about the procedures that we do pre-operatively, post-operatively, and have expectations of reasonable outcomes of surgery for your particular condition. We have included extensive sections on wisdom tooth removal and the reasons for this procedure to be performed. There is also a large section on dental implants which is a specific interest of mine. Recent developments in the field of implantology has really increased the amount of implants that we are doing and has increase the amount of patients that are able to have dental implants.

New procedures performed in our office are included in the website and more specifically these include the use of PRP, distraction osteogenesis, and minor bone grafting to include sinus lifts and onlay grafting in the upper and lower jaws. This has really been a benefit for patients who were not good candidates from an anatomical viewpoint that now can be considered for dental implants. We are having a high success rate with these procedures.

Thirdly, I think that it is important to tell you why our office is different from other Oral Surgeon’s offices in the Treasure Valley. I believe that I have assembled an excellent staff that truly cares about your well being and strives to make your visit to my office a pleasant experience, and as stress and pain free as possible. We make every attempt to spend enough time with each patient so you should not feel as though this is an assembly line to extract teeth or to place dental implants. For this reason we like to initially schedule a consultation so we can meet our patient prior to the day of surgery. This allows the patient to become familiar with the office facility, as well as meet the doctor and staff. When you do return for the procedure you will feel more comfortable and some of the fear of the unknown should be eliminated.

Another aspect of our office that sets us apart, I believe, is that we utilize a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist for certain patients in our office. For the very young patients and the elderly patients, as well as medically compromised patients, I believe that it is more comforting for family members and/or the patients themselves to know that there is an extra set of trained hands doing the anesthesia so the surgeon can perform the surgery and not have to simultaneously administer the anesthetic. We utilize the anesthetist approximately three days per month. This is usually adequate for the vast majority of patients to be able to find a time available that would coincide with when our anesthetist is present. We still provide I.V. deep sedation and general anesthesia without the use of a nurse anesthetist, but patients that we do this for are healthy and undergoing dentoalveolar surgeries that are less complex in nature than other surgeries that we would use our nurse anesthetist team for. In my office, I allow you to make the choice of anesthesia that you would like to use. You may have local anesthetic, nitrous oxide and oxygen analgesia, intravenous sedation, or general anesthesia. Many doctors will choose your type of anesthetic for you, but I believe, barring any health and medical history complications, you should be able to choose the type of anesthesia that you would like in our office. Our main goal is to have you as a patient feel comfortable with the procedures that we perform, as well as the type of anesthetic. We want your experience to be a positive one.

Again, thank you for visiting our website and if any questions arise concerning anything on the website, please bring those with you to the consultation and we will discuss them in detail. Please also utilize our website for post-operative instructions which are available on the website, as well as the information that you will be receiving from our office following your surgery.

Feel free to call our office any time should you have an emergency or with any questions or concerns that may arise following your procedure. I am available twenty-four hours a day when I am in town and if I am out of town there is always an Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon on call twenty-four hours a day. Thank you and enjoy our new website.

Sincerely,

Dr. Brett Comstock, DDS
